Organization Structure

Structure refers to the basic way that a firmís different activities are organized.

Generic types of organization structures include:

  • Functional -- divide into units associated with common business functions like marketing, sales and accounting
  • Geographic -- divide into units associated with geographic markets, territories, regions or regional administrative/sales headquaters
  • Divisional -- organize by product divisions
  • Strategic Business Unit (SBU) -- create separate businesses that are accountable for profits and losses
  • Matrix -- create a reporting relationship to function managers and project/program managers
