Environmental Scanning

Environmental scanning is a process of examining and forecasting competitor actions, industry forces and industry and company-specific threats and opportunities. Environmental scanning involves the acquisition and use of information about events, trends, and relationships in an organization's external environment. Scanning is intended to help managers plan an organization's future course of action. Four approaches to scanning are usually identified: undirected viewing, directed viewing, enacted viewing, and directed searching.
